Wish You Where Here...

Title: City Block
Medium: Silkscreen
Location: Urban Landscape

City Block represents my attachment to city life. I feed off the energy of the city and find myself enveloped in street art, fashion, and music. This design represents my home both in Philadelphia and New York. Prior to moving to Philadelphia, I was living in Park Slope, in Brooklyn. I frequently find myself traveling back and forth to these cities and consider both to be my home.

I think that your image is definitely representative of street art. I love the bright colors and bubbly clouds. They remind me of graffiti designs. Great image!

I love the image. It does have a lot of energy, and power. I find the overhanging clouds a little disturbing, though.

As a fellow city dweller and a printmaker, I enjoyed your piece for its straight up graphic nature, the flat color and the feeling of being surrounding by vertical forms - maybe us printmakers respond better to a mixture of flatten graphic shapes more than others? I know both Park Slope and Philly pretty well, as I have a friend who lived in Brooklyn for awhile and I able to get a feeling for its where abouts...in some ways not all that much different from Philadelphia or some parts of Washington, D.C. Nice to see another printers take on their on life and the inspiration they draw from the city.

Grace,

I'm not sure if you were conscious of it, but your image is very graffiti-like to me. It almost looks like it was spray-painted. It has a universal urban quality to it, in the sense that it could be any city, anywhere. It's obvious you find the urban atmosphere to be creative and defining, since your color and line quality seem deliberate.

Interesting. Your portrayal of city-life has quite the youthful quality to it. Very distinct style. Nice.

Hi Lady,

Love this. I do get a sense of both cities, and the colors are amazing. I admire your street art and your point of view.

This has a feel of house music album covers circa 1989! This has great soul, and is very hip and urban. I didn't know that this was a silkscreen print!.. great color blending in the sky and clouds! I love printed artwork that has deliberate 'registration' problems... it as much as confesses that technology may be quicker, but not necessarily better than hand made. Which is great! I'm no Luddite, but I do so appreciate things made by hand. Keep on Movin' don't stop, no!

Thank you for your comments on my blog. I did focus more on the writing, I think, as I was uncomfortable with the medium. I'm glad it worked alright.

Hi Grace,

Thanks for commenting on "Sanctuary". I'm glad you felt its delicacy because it's very normal for me to romanticize images. I feel that my home is such a regenerative place for me because of the nature that surrounds it. Nature is so strong yet so delicate.

Great Silkscreen! I am drawn to your use of colors. The picture gives off the feeling that you love your cities, it is a great cityscape.
Do the colors represent dusk? Have you added any street art to the streets of Philadelphia?

Just like you said musical in commenting on my image I think this is musical too. It's very loud and bubbly. I like that effect. I think it represents all the possibilities the city has to offer in a positive way.

Your cuddly pink clouds look a little like Keith Haring's Radiant Baby - I appreciate contrast of the harsh architecture next to those rounded forms

Hey Lady!

I can't wait to see what else you create. You have this really great ability to bring life to your images, they are not static, but very reflective of city life; always on the move.
